The Web is not unlike Platonic world of ideas. The distance between
pages (measured in clicks) is determined not by the geographical
location of servers, but by associative proximity. If you can read
Russian, see my article where the
dimension of this world is calculated (it turns out to be aproximately
7). Unconstrained by the rigid 3D Euclidian metrics of our physical
space, a Web surfer glides freely over the vast stretches of the Platonic
world.
Lyrics aside, this is a well-connected site, meaning there are
lots of links to be listed here. Alta Vista can find dozens of sites pointing to us, and I'll only list
those that are especially interesting or those that explicitly
requested it (or both).
dART, the
Internet Art Database -- nice place, something I was thinking of doing
myself! This database lists individual pieces and is searchable by
technique, price range, spirit, and even color. Wanna some ironic
mythological nudes in green and violet? Try it.
Visual Search for Visual
Art -- a funny place where you are presented with a totally
eclectic random slide show. Sit back and keep you finger on your
mouse to catch the image you like.
Art Department -- well
thought-out, well-designed, friendly site. They have a gallery,
a resource directory and an annual art competition with no entry
fee. And they don't even mandate a reciprocal link.
Art on the Net (art.net)
is a site dedicated to helping artists come up on the Internet
and the Web. This art space is made up of many studios and
gallery rooms that artists curate and maintain.
Art On The Net (artonthenet.net) -- both an online gallery and
a resource to find Art Museums, Art Galleries, Schools,
Art related Magazines, and more on the Internet.
With so much art on the Web (Yahoo lists over 2000 individual
artists), we're definitely lacking good indices. Plain link lists
abound, but are
of little use, comprehensive databases are few and far in
between, and focused thematic directories are almost
non-existent. This is an attempt at creating a useful directory. To be
focused, we
list only contemporary oil painters with their own Web sites (or
distinct sub-sites within a gallery). To give everybody equal
exposure, we present the list in a random
order, which is new every time you reload the page,
and show two random images at the top. To minimize guesswork, we
supply descriptive annotations.
